NOVEMBER 2008: All The Way From New York.

It’s been a long time since you heard from me but I’m now in the Big Apple and I’m finally living the dream. I’m at the New York Conservatory of Film and Television and I love it. The school’s amazing and the city is unbelievable! A big change compared to what my life was like in London but I’m so happy and feel privileged to have this experience.

My days consist of classes involving voice and speech, acting in front of the camera (I never realised how much takes place on a film set!) & we have movement and improvisation classes. At the moment we are studying for our mid terms and then soon we will have our final exams of the term. So I bet you want to hear about the interesting stuff? What’s it like to live in the city & to be at school in America? Well I will be honest and say that everyday I feel like I’m waking up on a film set and in fact last week they were filming a scene for “30 rock” (a television series) just down the road from where I live. It’s incredible to be able to experience the real preparation of what we are learning about in school.

The hardest thing about moving here is adjusting to another lifestyle. Everybody in New York is extremely focused and direct but this is working to my advantage as it’s strengthening me as a character… Not that I’m becoming a rude bitch!!
(I hasten to add) Just that I’m toughening up! Another hard factor is being a vegetarian in the city! If you have been to New York you must be aware of how its very meat dominated but I did find a vegan friendly restaurant! I will have to check it out!! The health system over here is also a bit bizarre as you have to have insurance to see a doctor & even when you have it you have to make sure the surgery accepts your insurance! So when I had an allergic reaction and my face bloomed up like a beetroot?!! The last thing I wanted to think about is insurance! But these are all things I will overcome for the sake of living in such an amazing city (and by the way my sarcasm has become more prominent - I will blame that on New York as well).

Ok, so my favourite things about New York. Where do I begin? The weather is incredible. We had perfect sunny days up until last week and now we’re starting to experience fall - all crisp and fresh. I haven’t seen rain for the last 3 months & I think I’m starting to have withdrawal symptoms (there goes my sarcasm again!).

I also fell in love with Central park. It’s so romantic! I discovered that a lot of films have scenes that are shot in the park-“Enchanted” being one and there were many more but I can’t remember them. I was mesmerised by the scenery! I also visited the John Lennon memorial spot. I posted a photo of the symbolic area. Its crazy how famous The Beatles were in America (even now-the younger generation are still in love with them!).

What else is there to tell? Personally I’m definitely growing and maturing as an actress (and that’s just the result of three months-imagine me at the end of the year, I’ll be sounding like a granny!). I miss my mum, family and friends very much and I also miss a good cup of tea!! If I could bring all those things over to New York life would be perfect!

I will keep you updated with all the news and gossip from the other side of the pond!!!..

Thankyou for your support guys and take care…

And as the Americans say -“Have a nice day”
